Since 1932, his face is present on 25-cent coins and 1-dollar bills. He is the 1st President and 1st General of the American armies in the history of the United States of America. George Washington is without a doubt one of the major figures in the history of the United States of America especially with his status as Founding Father.
George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Pope’s Creek, Virginia during the colonial era to a wealthy family who owned a plantation first at Little Hunting Creek then at Ferry Farm. In 1759, he married Martha Dandridge Custis and the couple settled in Mount Vernon (new name for Little Hunting Creek) and devoted himself to agricultural activity and in particular the production of tobacco which he exported to the United Kingdom. He participated in the War of Independence (1775-1783) where he held the position of commander-in-chief of the continental army. During this war, he was opposed to the British army which was more numerous, better armed and better trained. However, he succeeded in keeping the red tunics in check thanks to the discipline he established as well as with the help of the French and several free black men whom he had decided to recruit. On April 30, 1789, George Washington officially became head of the executive power, a position he held for two terms or 8 years. On December 14, 1799, almost 2 years after his last mandate, George Washington died due to a bacterial infection of the epiglottis. An illness he contracted while wearing wet clothes. His throat never stopped swelling until choking. His body was buried in Mount Vernon. His death leaves an incredible loss for the American nation that had just been born.
It is the journey of this man who made him famous and iconic in the eyes of Americans. A rich man from a noble family who led the people to their liberation from the British colonial grip and who became a symbol by becoming the first president of an emerging nation which has become today the most powerful nation in the world.
