Since 1932, his face is present on 25-cent coins and 1-dollar bills. He is the 1st President and 1st General of the American armies in the history of the United States of America. George Washington is without a doubt one of the major figures in the history of the United States of America especially with his status as Founding Father.
George Washington was born on February 22, 1732 in Pope’s Creek, Virginia during the colonial era to a wealthy family who owned a plantation first at Little Hunting Creek then at Ferry Farm. In 1759, he married Martha Dandridge Custis and the couple settled in Mount Vernon (new name for Little Hunting Creek) and devoted himself to agricultural activity and in particular the production of tobacco which he exported to the United Kingdom. He participated in the War of Independence (1775-1783) where he held the position of commander-in-chief of the continental army. During this war, he was opposed to the British army which was more numerous, better armed and better trained. However, he succeeded in keeping the red tunics in check thanks to the discipline he established as well as with the help of the French and several free black men whom he had decided to recruit. On April 30, 1789, George Washington officially became head of the executive power, a position he held for two terms or 8 years. On December 14, 1799, almost 2 years after his last mandate, George Washington died due to a bacterial infection of the epiglottis. An illness he contracted while wearing wet clothes. His throat never stopped swelling until choking. His body was buried in Mount Vernon. His death leaves an incredible loss for the American nation that had just been born.
It is the journey of this man who made him famous and iconic in the eyes of Americans. A rich man from a noble family who led the people to their liberation from the British colonial grip and who became a symbol by becoming the first president of an emerging nation which has become today the most powerful nation in the world.
On April 19, 2020 Netflix launched the first episodes of its new mini series called The Last Dance. This show deals with the season 1997-1998 of the Chicago Bulls. This season was the last championship run for Michael Jordan in a Bulls’ jersey, therefore a production team decided to follow the franchise in its daily life. Flashbacks are present showing the evolution of the players, the franchise and the 5 titles it won previously, to explain why this team is reputed to be the best team in the NBA history.
Three players are highlighted :
Dennis Rodman who was, without any doubt, one of the best defenders in the history of basketball also known for his sulfurous lifestyle.
Scottie Pippen, a very complete small forward able to defend hard on the man and to martyrize his opponents in attack. He has been Michael Jordan’s right hand since arriving in Chicago.
And obviously Michael Jordan, how can we talk about the Chicago Bulls without talking about the greatest player of all time. This was his last season in Chicago and his second retirement before a surprising comeback in Washington. This series not only highlights his sporting exploits, but also some controversies that he may have aroused as when he was suspected of being addicted to gambling.
In short, this series is a must for all fans of Chicago and Michael Jordan, those who discovered the NBA during this very special period, or simply fans of this sport and this league. Six episodes have already been released and two unpublished episodes are released every Monday. The series will have only one season and the last episodes will be released on May 18, 2020.
Tupac Shakur was born on June 16, 1971 in East Harlem (New York) and died on September 13, 1996. He was only 25 years old when he was assassinated, but became a legend in music history thanks to his charisma, his image, and obviously his talent. I invite you to briefly retrace his journey, between controversy and large-scale success.
Tupac’s parents (Afeni Shakur, his mother, and Billy Garland, his father) were both Black Panthers in the 60s and early 70s. Tupac grew up with his mother and stepfather Mutulu Shakur who was also a Black Panther. His parents’ commitment and their ideals have greatly influenced him in his life and his career.
He started in rap in Baltimore where he became known as MC New York in 1991. The same year he launched his first album called 2Pacalypse Now which will be certified gold record in 1995. He published his second album (Strictly 4 My N.I.G.G.A.Z.) in 1993 which will be certified platinum record.
At the same time, between 1991 and 1994, Tupac combined legal disputes. In 1993 a fan accused him of rape, which he always denied. At the trial he was found guilty of sexual abuse and was sentenced to one and a half years in prison. He began serving his sentence in 1995 in Dannemora prison. During his sentence, he released an album called Me Against the World. This album immediately became number one on the Billboard 200 and remained leader for 5 weeks. Tupac was the first to achieve this performance.
Tupac got out of prison thanks to Suge Knight, director of Death Row label, who paid his bail. In return Tupac commited to the label to record three albums. During his collaboration with Death Row, Tupac recorded hundreds of songs including the one he shared with Dr Dre, California Love considered as one of the greatest classics in rap history.
At that time his rivalry with Biggie and the label Bad Boys Records led to violent clashes like this evening of September 7, 1996 when Tupac and a team of his label fought in a Las Vegas casino with a member of the Crips gang. A few hours later, he was shot while he was in car with Suge Knight. One of the bullets he received lodged in his right lung. He was immediately sent to the University Medical Center of Southern Nevada, and died a few days later on September 13, 1996 due to his injuries.
Even today the circumstances surrounding his death remain unclear. What is certain is that Tupac has marked the history of music. And for good reason, at only 25 years old, he has accumulated a large number of works that have broken all records. His tumultuous life and his undeniable talent unleashed the crowds during his lifetime, and still fascinate even 24 years after his death.
Somaliland is still a little-known country. It has a particularity : it is an independent country but not recognized by the international community. This country is located in the Horn of Africa, bordering Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Yemen. Independent from Somalia since 1991,this country has its own president,Musa Bihi Abdi of the Party for Peace, Unity and Development, elected in 2017, its own capital named Hargeisa and its own currency named the Somaliland Shilling. The inhabitants are called the « Somalilander » and number about 3.5 million. Nevertheless, the country is seeking to develop its economic situation through trade, which is a very important element in contributing to it. For this, it is looking for investors. DPWorld, alogistics company with international reputation, has invested more than $400,000,000 to support the country’s development. However, many investors are sceptical about the country’s political status. But the country is determined to prove that it has the resources todevelop through itsreach it :agriculture, fishing, manufacturing and oil and gas exploration. Commercial offices are slowly beginning to flourish. Moreover, the country has an essential and strategic element to help open the country to globalization: Berbera, the commercial capital and its commercial port. The country absolutely wants to show other countries that it is ready to welcome infrastructure and that foreign capital will be safe there. For example, Coca-Cola has a large factory in the country. Indeed, the establishment of a factory would create jobsand develop the economic situation of the country.
Since 2017, Dua Lipa has become one of Britain’s most listened to female pop-star artists. In June 2017, she launched her career with her debut pop album « Dua Lipa ». »IDGF », « One Kiss » and « New Rules » were the most popular tracks. But she also had the chance to collaborate with extremely famous artists on some of her songs such as Martin Garrix for « One Kiss » or Chris Martin, leader of Coldplay, for the track « Homesick ». 3 years later, we can see that the singer has found her place in the world of international pop, she is at the top of her game.
After a successful first album, the singer released her second album less than a week ago. The release date was originally scheduled for April 3rd, unfortunately all the tracks have leaked on the web. Because of the health crisis, the situation of the singer was not the easiest. That’s why she decided to bring forward her release dateto March 23rd. In order to be positive about the situation, she revealed that the release of the album could bring joy and happiness to her public. Furthermore, she had already unveiled some of her songs before its release such as « Don’t start know » or « Physical ». This second album called « Future Nostalgia » is still very pop, with dancing sounds but focuses on much more specific topics such as breakups, boys’ bad behaviour, or women emancipation. To make it short, we understand that the objective of the singer is still to make her audience dance but especially to make them think about the different elements mentioned above.
Spring Break in America is an important event. Actually, it happens for the spring holidays but that depend on counties or states. And this « party » takes place the week before or after Easter, schools schedule spring break for the week of the third Monday in April to coincide with Patriot’s Day.
Patriot’s Day is the anniversary of the American Revolutionary War.
Spring Break regroups thousands or even millions of young people, mostly students, they will go to Florida, California, Texas, Cancun or nearby islands. As tradition requires that students travel at least once during their four years of study to a warm location with their friends and classmates to have fun for a week.
This period is also used for families who want to go on holidays or meet family members. But it’s true that in France when we speak about Spring Break, this alludes to « party ». Parties during Spring Break usually take place on beaches, or nightclubs. Young people meet up in pubs, but it’s « excess week », in order to relax after their school year.
According to the destinations, the trip can be very expensive, because it’s necessary to provide plane, housing, food, nightclubs and alcohol consumption.
But this year, Spring break has taken another flavour, partly due to the coronavirus.
Six weeks ago, Spring break was maintained because it was thought that the virus was far away and wouldn’t affect Florida.
Plenty of young people are have planned their Spring Break trip in Florida, Jamaica, Mexico, thinking that virus will not affect them because they. are young, and that the virus affects only old people.
With the number of people on the beaches during Spring Break trip, the virus could spread at a high rate. Tom Hanks was also infected and this began to panic the Florida population as well as young people wanting to go there. State and local authorities have decided to act by forbidding gatherings of many people. They have also asked the nightclubs to close and are considering introducing a curfew if the rules are not respected.
Unfortunately, in the United States as elsewhere in the world, some people think they are untouchable and act in they own interest putting in danger their health and health of other people.
For some American students, it was unthinkable not to leave during Spring Break, they would not follow the rules, such as washing their hands, not being too close to others, they didn’t realize how serious the situation was good.
But as American middle and high schools began to extend Spring holidays and plan for online courses, some began to worry. The situation was becoming critical, but personal well-being was very important. It was also complicated to cancel Spring Break because isn’t a single event in one place, it extends to several places and several states.
States cannot prevent anyone from coming on holidays, however, the population must understand that social distancing must be practicsed. But, despite the state of emergency declared by the governor , no one seems to be worried.
Yet, the message is very clear, it’s time to understand that everyone can be affected by this virus and there is no such thing as a « special » profile.
To conclude, this tradition has begun to take hold in Europe in recent years, even though it seems that Europeans have less fun than Americans…
Housebound New York’s residents are using a neighbourhood app to connect and help each other in the midst of the coronavirus outbreak.
James Steinberg
New York City is today pointed out as the epicentre of the American coronavirus. In its borough of Brooklyn, quarantined residents are helping each other out via Nextdoor. The app’s main role is in directing people to organizations and networks most appropriate to meet their needs, and the posts retrace the daily life of a neighbourhood on lockdown. An 84-years-old woman asked for help to pick up her medicine at a local pharmacy since she is living alone and vulnerable to the virus. She quickly received 5 offers to help from neighbours she never met. She admitted that “this has been the only good side to all of this — the community reaching out.” Her interaction with the person dropping off her medicine is always played in the same safe way.
“I see the person, I flip the check through the mail slot, I tell them to leave the supplies and I drag them in”.
In recent weeks, the engagement nearly doubled on the platform that used to be a place to ask for recommendations, sell things, advocate for local causes, as well as to complain about one another, spread unproven rumours and theory conspiracies. Many are logging for the first time with more necessary questions. Someone ill asked where to buy a thermometer, another where to buy protective equipment, an essential worker asked about free MetroCards. A group feature, along with general safety guidelines, was newly added on the platform. It now allows users to gather around similar topics. Corona Couriers is a recent group where bike couriers deliver with a no-touch policy essential goods to the confined people of New York. Another group that started on Nextdoor is Brooklyn Mutual Aid, which offers to do deliveries and social support in the district. However, limits of the neighbourhood social network exist since a part of the residents don’t use technology. Fliers, calls to senior centres and outreach to community organizations allow to bridge with those who need the most help.
Nextdoor can also be used to find humour and surprise. The Twitter account @bestofnextdoor compile curious, appalling and comic posts found around US neighbourhoods.
“Conspiracy theories, people trying to lighten the mood with humour, and the bad ones — racist submissions” can be read there, explained Ms. Takahashi who runs the account. In Minneapolis, residents organized via Nextdoor a singing get together on their doorstep, motivated by videos of quarantined Italians on their balconies. A lone resident shared his experience on Nextdoor’s Twitter account: “I was the only one on my block, but it still felt really good, and just a little bit embarrassing.”

Released in 2019 but arrived on Netflix on 13 March 2020, Kogustaki Mucize is a Turkish drama by Mehmet Ada Öztekin telling the story of a disabled father separated from his daughter, trying to prove his innocence when he is arrested for the murder of the daughter of a military commander. Sent to prison where he is mistreated for the crime he has committed and threatened to hang, the hero only thinks of one thing: to see his little Ova again.
This movie keeps getting talked about on social media right now. This feature made his views explode since confinement. It is now one of the 10 most watched films on all streaming platforms and currently #1 on Netflix. Why do people like it so much?
Netflix had warned its subscribers. "If you don't cry in front of" 7. Koğuştaki Mucize "(...) nothing more can be done for you".
2.12 hours of drama, suspense, emotions. This moving and heartbreaking film has generated a wave of applause on the networks saying that this film deserves the Oscar for Best Film. If the film works very well and manages to arouse emotion, the overall result unfortunately abounds with many clichés.
Mehmet Ada Öztekin has managed to take the time to develop each of these personalities which will influence the destiny of the central character. The things that make us the most emotional is the fact of the father's disability, the fact that he is arrested and tortured for something he did not commit, and his fusional relationship with his daughter.
Is this story inspired of true one ? "7. Koğuştaki Mucize is an adaptation of the South Korean film," 7beonbangui Seonmul”(" Miracle in Cell No. 7 "of its international title).Released in 2013, it has received numerous awards in its country. If the story is a fiction, it is still inspired from afar by a news item that caused a stir in South Korea.
Kogustaki came timidly on the networks and established itself as one of the best films ever seen since "The Green Line", so we have only one question to ask: when will the next Turkish film?
With 3,5 billion people confined, the entire world is slowingdown.
This is an exceptional situation for the 21th century.
As we know, the Queen is a strong symbol in the United Kingdom and all across Europe. Elisabeth II was born on the 21th of April 1926 in London and she’sthe Queen of the United Kingdom, of Great Britain, Northern Ireland and some sovereign states called Commonwealth realms.
For this exceptional situation, the Queen gave a speech from Windsor Castle to praised the “coming together to help others” and to thank people for staying home and following government rules.
It should be known that special addresses of the Queen are extremely rare :it was only the fifth time in her 68-year reign that she has addressed the nation. She had also directly given a speech at the beginning of the war in Iraq, after Diana’s funeral, her mother’s funeral, to marked her Diamond Jubilee and the 5th of April for the coronavirus pandemic so.
They were about 24 million TV viewers which is the second most-watched program this year, just after Boris Johnson’s speech who was talking about new pandemic restrictions and which was watched by 27 million people.
She also thanked key workers of this pandemic such as people in medical professions for their effort and added that the pandemic is “a different challenge” compared to those already known by the nation.
She concluded by those words “we will meet again” a symbol of hope in these strange times, and a clearly reference to Dame Vera Lynn’s war anthem We’ll Meet Again.
